The estimated coal resources in the country are 2,47,846.85 million tonnes (MT) as assessed by Geological Survey of India upto January 2005. The estimated reserve of lignite in the country as in April 2005 is 37,154 MT. The all India coal demand in 2005-06 as finalised by the Planning Commission is 445.65 MT.

Coal India Limited (CIL) produced 323.63 MT raw coal (provisional) in 2004-05. During mid-term appraisal, the target for CIL has been revised upward to 373.00 MT, for the terminal year of Xth Plan (2006-07) as compared to earlier projection of 350.00 MT made by the Working Group on Coal & Lignite.

Neyveli Lignite Corporation Limited (NLC) has planned to increase the lignite production from the projected production level of 20.40 MT in 2005-06. With the sanctioning of expansion of Mine-II from 10.5 MT per annum to 15 MT per annum and sanctioning of a new mine of 2.1 MT per annum at Barsingsar, NLC's lignite mining capacity is projected to increase from the present level of 24 MT per annum to 30.6 MT per annum by 2009-10.

This information was given by the Minister of State for Coal & Mines, Dr. Dasari Narayana Rao, in a written reply in the Rajya Sabha today.
