Government of India has been releasing the financial assistance to various States and Union Territories for development of judicial infrastructure such as construction of court buildings and residences of judges and judicial officers. Funds to the tune of nearly 100 crore and 71.65 crore have been released during the years 2002-03 and 2003-04 respectively. The plan allocation of Rs.103.05 crore was reprioritized for computerization of district and subordinate courts during the year 2004-05.

The requests for the release of funds for the current year have come from Andhra Pradesh, Assam, Bihar, Chhatisgarh, Goa, Gujarat, Haryana, Himachal Pradesh, Jammu & Kashmir, Jharkhand, Karnataka, Kerala, Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, Mizoram, Nagaland, Orissa, Punjab, Rajasthan, Sikkim, Tamil Nadu, Tripura, Uttranchal, Uttar Pradesh, West Bengal, Andaman & Nicobar Islands, Chandigarh, Delhi and Pondicherry.

Although the responsibility of the expenditure in respect of High Courts and Sub-ordinate Courts lies with the concerned State/UT Governments, yet the Central Government provides funds for the development of infrastructure facilities to augment the resources of States and UTs. The share of the Central Government is allocated by the Planning Commission.

This information was given by the Minister of State for law and Justice, Shri K. Venkatapathy in a written reply in the Lok Sabha today.
