Archeological Survey of India (ASI), will challenge in Supreme Court the decision of the UP Central Sunni Wakf Board pronouncing the Taj Mahal at Agra as a Wakf property. The chairman of the UP Central Sunni Wakf Board had, on July 13, 2005, pronounced this decision under Section 36/40 of the Wakf Act, 1995 and had said that the Taj Mahal should be registered as a Wakf property. This was stated by the Minister of Social Justice and Empowerment, Smt. Meira Kumar in a written reply in the Rajya Sabha today.

She said that the Wakf Boards are constituted under the Wakf Act, 1995. Smt. Kumar said that the winding up of Wakf Boards is not contemplated so the question of alternative arrangement does not arise.
