An analysis of the 4703 companies registered in March, 2005 in India under the Companies Act, 1956 shows that the highest number (1295) of them was in the category of manufacturing sector. It was followed by finance, insurance, real estate and business services(1285). In the category of wholesale and retail trade and restaurants and hotels, 1051 companies were registered. Other industrial classifications along with the number of companies registered were construction (573), community, social and personal services (173), transport, storage and communication(179), agriculture and allied activities(89) and mining and quarrying (32).

Four hundred eight non-government companies, each with an authorized capital of Rs. 50 lakh, were registered as against 340 in the same month last year. Twenty-five companies limited by shares ceased functioning.

Of them, 6 were public limited and 19 private limited companies. Nineteen of them were in Tamil Nadu, 5 in Karnataka and 1 in Rajasthan. They related to finance, insurance, real estate, business services, manufacturing, wholesale and retail trade and restaurants and hotels.
