The Government has received 86 proposals for appointments of Judges in various High Courts from the Chief Justices of High Courts with regard to 134 vacancies occurred till 31st July, 2005. Giving this information in Rajya Sabha today, the Minister of State for Law and Justice, Shri K. Venkatapathy said that the Government has been requesting the Chief Justices of High Courts, Chief Ministers and the Governors to initiate proposals for filling up the current and the anticipated vacancies during the next six months.
The Minister further stated that there are 536 Judges in position as against the sanctioned strength of 670 in 21 High Courts. The Government is making efforts to fill up the vacancies as expeditiously as possible since there is a huge pendency of 33,79,033 cases in various High Courts.
