Altogether 4703 companies were registered in the country under the Companies Act, 1956 in March this year. The number of companies registered in the corresponding month of 2004 was 4022. Of the 4703 companies registered in March, 2005, 4677 were limited by shares. These included the Tamil Nadu Road Infrastructure Development Corporation, a State-owned company. The total authorized capital of the companies limited by shares put together amounted to Rs. 969.4 crore. The companies registered included 157 public limited ones with an authorized capital of Rs. 214.1 crore. The rest were private limited companies with an authorized capital of Rs. 755.3 crore.
The highest number of companies, limited by shares, registered during the month was in Delhi (1127). It was followed by Maharashtra (801), West Bengal(664), Tamil Nadu(378), Andhra Pradesh(276), Karnataka (242) and Gujarat (211). Taken together, the seven States accounted for nearly 79% of the total number of companies registered during the month.
