There are 1099 private self-financing engineering colleges approved by the All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) for the year 2004-05. AICTE monitors the quality in private technical institutions by conducting periodic inspections. It is verified through the Expert Committee Visits that the infrastructure, faculty and other resources available in the technical institutions are as per norms and standards laid down by AICTE.

While processing proposal for the academic year 2005-06, major emphasis has been laid on the requirement of faculty as per AICTE norms. This has resulted in sensitization of the institutions to the need for quality focus.

Further, the National Board of Accreditation (NBA) under AICTE accredits approved institutions after a systematic assessment against prescribed set of parameters. Some of the other initiatives include the Research and Institutional Development, Faculty Development and Networking Schemes.

Out of 1099 colleges, 235 colleges are in Tamil Nadu, 231 colleges in Andhra Pradesh, 134 in Maharshtra, 64 in Uttar Pradesh, 49 in Madhya Prade3sh, 36 each in West Bengal and Rajasthan and 33 colleges in Orissa.

This information was given by the Minister of State for Human Resource Development, Shri M.A.A. Fatmi in Rajya Sabha today.
