Rajya Sabha

The Minister of State for External Affairs, Shri E. Ahamed told the Rajya Sabha today that it is not mandatory to go for online internet registration for submission of passport applications in all passport offices in India, except in Mumbai where it has been started on an experimental basis from March 2005. However, in Regional Passport Office, Mumbai, even after Internet registration, applicants do have the choice to submit their applications on a day other than the specified date. Online Internet registration is also not necessary if application is submitted through any of the District Passport Centres in Mumbai.

The Minister added that the facility to do online registration has been provided within the office premises of Regional Passport Office in Mumbai. The registration is done free of cost; and it takes around 50 days to issue a fresh passport.

The above information was given by the Minister in reply to a question by Shri Vasant Chavan.
