Coal India Limited (CIL), the public sector coal major, has taken initiatives to pursue overseas opportunities in coking coal and low ash thermal coal, both of which have limited techno-commercially viable domestic reserves. The initiative is at a very nascent stage. The possible destination countries are Australia, South Africa, Zimbabwe, Indonesia and Russia.
There is scarcity of techno-commercially exploitable reserves of coking and low ash thermal coal in the country. CIL has envisaged to invest in foreign coal opportunities to bridge the demand-supply gap and to enhance the energy security of the nation.
This information was given by the Minister of State for Coal, Dr. Dasari Narayana Rao, in a written reply in the Rajya Sabha today.
