The National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC) has, so far, accredited a total of 122 Universities and 2486 colleges throughout the country. A comprehensive action plan has been drafted by NAAC through consultative process with the State Governments in order to encourage higher educational institutions in the States to undergo assessment and accreditation. More than 20 States have since formed State Level Quality Assurance Coordinating Committee (SLQACC) and Quality Assurance Cells (QAC) with funding from NAAC and there has been increasingly greater involvement of States in the process of assessment and accreditation. According to the University Grants Commission, the accredited institutions are accorded preference over other institutions under certain schemes like College with Potential for Excellence.
In Andhra Pradesh, 12 universities and 66 colleges are accredited by NAAC, three universities and 178 colleges in Bihar and in Karnataka 8 universities and 415 colleges have been given accreditation by the council.
