The 75th Anniversary of the Dandi March will be celebrated for one year throughout the country. This would include setting up exhibitions on the historic March in all State Capitals. A DVD on the Dandi March has also been made available in the market. This was announced by the Union Minister of Information & Broadcasting and Culture, Shri S. Jaipal Reddy after inaugurating a Photo Exhibition on Dandi March at the Gandhi Smriti, here today. Shri Reddy said that the Gandhijis technique of non-violence prepared the country for democracy, and his philosophy of non-violence is more relevant in the present day. The Minister said that the occasion should prompt each one of us to contemplate and reflect on Gandhian ideals.
The former President of India, Shri R. Venkataraman, who was also present at the inauguration, in his remarks said that it is necessary to inculcate in the minds of younger generations the values of freedom struggle. The time has come when we must revive the activities undertaken by Gandhiji, he added. Several Gandhians were also present on the occasion.
The week-long exhibition has been organized by DAVP to commemorate the 75th anniversary of the salt March of Mahatma Gandhi from Sabramati to the coastal village of Dandi in 1930 to break the British Salt Law. The exhibition depicts through 100 photographs, the unique journey of the Mahatma who, along with 78 Satyagrahis, set out on 12th March, 1930 for the 25-day journey. The exhibition will remain open till 8.4.2005 daily from 10.00 AM to 5.30 P.M.
