The Union Cabinet today gave its approval to fill up 287 posts of scientific and technical disciplines in the Geological Survey of India(GSI) which are lying vacant for more than one year and also the scientific and technical posts of GSI should be exempted from the purview of the guidelines contained in the O.M. dated May 16, 2001.
At present 287 direct recruitment posts of scientific and technical disciplines in GSI are lying vacant for more than one year which could not be filled up by UPSC for want of revision of Recruitment Rules. Due to non-filling up of the above posts, work relating to airborne survey and marine survey is adversely affected. Further, due to non-filling up of the posts in the Chemistry discipline, large number of samples have accumulated for examination.
The Prime Minister has desired that the morale of the Geological Survey of India needs a boost. He has also desired a single window clearance mechanism for processing applications for Mining Licences to be in place and also upgradation of technical competence of GSI. If the 287 scientific and technical posts are allowed to be filled up by keeping them out of the purview of the Department of Personnel & Training O.M. dated May 16, 2001, young scientific and technical persons will be made available and scientific work will not suffer.
