special olympic delegation calls on sunil dutt

A delegation of Special Olympic International lead by Dr. Timothy Shriver, Chariman & CEO of Special Olympics International called on the Union Minister for Youth Affairs & Sports, Shri Sunil Dutt here today.

Dr. Timothy Shriver told Shri Dutt that the aim of the visit of Special Olympic Delegation to India is to double the number of athletes from 101,000 to 200,000; the number of coaches from 3600 to 10,000; volunteers from 10,000 to 20,000 and involved families from 10,000 to 20,000 and also establish 200 new local programmes in 24 States. He also told Shri Dutt that the organization also wants to start a process of designating 20 prominent Indians in various walks of life as ‘Ambassadors’ of the Movement.

The Minister applauded the good work done by the Movement and assured that the Government would extend all possible cooperation in the Movement’s endeavour to promote confidence and self respect amongst intellectually disabled persons through participation in sports.

Founded in 1968, Special Olympics were officially recognized by the International Olympics Committee in 1988. The main objective of the Special Olympic Movement is to change societal attitudes and perceptions towards intellectually disabled persons and promote equal healthcare for the intellectually disabled, while simultaneously promoting confidence and self-respect through participation in sports.
