The Union Cabinet today gave its approval to the progress on filling up of the backlog reserved vacancies of the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes.

"Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes" is one of the main resolutions contained in the National Common Minimum Programme which says:

In pursuance of codification of reservations, a Bill namely "The Scheduled Castes, Scheduled Tribes and the Other Backward Classes (Reservation in Posts and Services) Bill, 2004" was introduced in the Rajya Sabha on December 22, 2004.

The Deptt. of Personnel & Training took the following steps to filling up the backlog vacancies of SC & ST :

A Special Recruitment Drive launched to fill up the backlog reserved vacancies of SC and ST in direct recruitment quota.

All the Ministries/Departments were requested to fill backlog reserved vacancies of SCs/STs in promotion quota through a Special Drive.

The Cabinet decided to set up a Monitoring Committee under Cabinet Secretary to review effective implementation of the policy.
