railways freight earnings up by over 12 per cent in during 2004-2005

Indian Railways earned Rs. 30844.13 crores from 601.89 Million Tonnes (MTs) of revenue freight during the financial year ending March 2005, compared to Rs. 27403.15 crores from 557.39 MTs of such traffic during the corresponding period of the previous year, registering an increase of 12.56 per cent.

Of the total earnings, Rs. 13104.79 crores came from transportation of 271.06 MTs of coal, followed by Rs. 1275.23 crores from 44.11 MTs of raw material to steel plants, Rs. 1520.51 crores from 14.86 MTs of finished iron and steel, Rs. 1468.98 crores from 36.33 MTs of iron ore for exports, Rs. 2487.96 crores from 54.23 MTs of cement, Rs. 3146.20 crores from 46.19 MTs of foodgrains, Rs. 1296.50 crores from 28.36 MTs of fertilizers, Rs. 2760.73 crores from 32.40 MTs of Petroleum Oil and Lubricant (POL) and Rs. 3783.23 crores from 74.35 MTs of other goods.

The freight traffic in Net Tonne Kilo Metres (NTKMs) in millions increased by 7.90 per cent from 381241 NTKMs in millions to 411354 NTKMs in millions.

Earnings per Million Tonne in crores increased by 4.24 per cent from Rs. 49.16 crores to Rs. 51.25 crores per million tonne. Earnings per Net Tonne Kilometre (NTKM) in paise increased by 4.32 paise from 71.88 paise to 74.98 paise per NTKM.
