The total production of finished steel during April 2004 to March 2005 has been provisionally estimated to be about 383.25 lakh tonnes as against the production of 369.57 lakh tonnes during the same period last showing an increase of 3.7 per cent. The apparent consumption of finished steel during 2004-05 was 334.00 lakh tonnes which is higher by 7.2 per cent as compared to 311.69 lakh tonnes for the corresponding period last year.

The total production of pig iron during the period 2004-05 has been estimated to be 31.70 lakh tonnes as against the production of 37.64 lakh tonnes during the same period last year showing a decrease of 15. 78 per cent . Similarly, the consumption of pig iron during last financial year was 29.00 lakh tonnes, which is lower by 11.12 per cent as compared to 32.63 lakh tonnes during the corresponding period last year.

The export of steel during last financial year has been estimated to be 42.00 lakh tonnes showing a decrease of 23.89 per cent as compared to 55.19 lakh tonnes for the corresponding period last year. The decrease in exports is partly symptomatic of increase in the domestic demand. The Government has also emphasised the need for giving priority to meeting domestic demand before undertaking exports.
