The Prime Minister, Dr. Manmohan Singh, has expressed his grief at the passing away of the noted Punjabi litterateur Bhapa Pritam Singh. In a condolence message from Mauritius, where he is on a four-day visit from March 30, 2005, the Prime Minister said:

“I am deeply grieved to learn of the sad demise of Bhapa Pritam Singh, an illustrious writer, noted littérateur and a renowned publisher. One of the leading lights of Punjabi literature, Bhapa Pritam Singh deeply influenced generations of writers and readers through his numerous literary pieces. The monthly journal ‘Arsee’, which he founded, was a manifestation of his passion for literature and emerged as one of the popular and widely read journals. He was held in high esteem not only for the quality of his writings and his calibre as a remarkable literary figure of our time but also was acclaimed as an outstanding human being. The expression of gratitude by some of the veteran and reputed Punjabi writers, novelists and poets is a measure of the high standing Bhapa Pritam Singh had in the literary field and the society and nation.

The passing away of Shri Pritam Singh is an irreparable loss to the Punjabi literary world. I convey my heart felt condolences to the members of his bereaved family and to the wide circle of his friends, admirers and associates, and pray that the departed soul may rest in peace”.
