The All-India Consumer Price Index for Agricultural Labourers (Base 1986-87 = 100) remained constant at 340 points but fell by one point in case of Rural Labourers to stand at 342 points during March 2005.
In case of Agricultural Labourers 10 states reflected a decrease in indices ranging between 1 to 5 points while eight states showed an increase ranging between 1 to 2 points. In two states the index remained constant.
In case of Rural Labourers 9 states reflected a decrease in indices ranging between 1 to 5 points while eight states showed an increase ranging between 1 to 3 points. The index remained constant in three states.
Himachal Pradesh and Karnataka in respect of Agricultural Labourers and Karnataka in case of Rural Labourers experienced sharpest decrease of 5 points each. The decrease has been mainly due to fall in prices of rice, wheat atta, maize atta, jawar, chillies dry, tamarind, sugar and firewood. On the other hand, Jammu & Kashmir, Manipur, Orissa, Punjab and Rajasthan recorded a maximum increase of two points each for Agricultural Labourers whereas for Rural Labourers Jammu & Kashmir recorded a maximum increase of three points mainly due to increase in prices of rice, wheat atta, jawar, bajra, maize, chillies green, sugar and vegetables & fruits.
Haryana figured at the top of the index table with 359 points for Agricultural Labourers and with 361 points in case of Rural Labourers. Maharashtra and Manipur remained at the bottom of the index for Agricultural labourers and Rural Labourers with 305 points each respectively.
Point to point rate of inflation based on CPI-AL remained stationary during March 2005 whereas in case of CPI-RL the rate of inflation increased from 2.39% in the previous month to stand at 2.40%. Respective rates of inflation during March 2004 were 2.47% and 2.45 %.
