The Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation has proposed to modernize the statistical system in the country with support from the World Bank. The Programme “Modernization of Statistical System in India” already under progress, has given birth to the sub-project implementation plan for Tier-1 of the main project. The Sub-project has been cleared for implementation under technical assistance as an economic reforms programme by the Department of Economic Affairs.
The Tier-1 of the project includes several components i.e. Establishment of an All India Statistical Network, Strengthening of the State Statistical System, Study of Business Register, Study on Service Sector Statistics, Study of assessing the survey capabilities of the private sector etc. The implementation of the sub-project has already been initiated.
The action on engaging Agencies for conducting study of various components of Tier-1 has also begun as scheduled. Contracts for each of the component, except for the study on the establishment of the All India Statistical network, are likely to be finalised soon. However, all studies relating to Tier-1 project are poised for completion as programmed.
The Ministry will set up a special unit for monitoring the work relating to implementation of various components of the modernization programme.
