mecl adds 732 million tonnes minerals to national inventory

Mineral Exploration Corporation Limited (MECL), a public sector unit of the Mines Ministry has completed 1,16,359 meters of drilling during April-December 2004 as against 1,13,421 meters during the same period last year. In developmental mining the achievement has been 4,808 meters as against 2,270 meters during the same period of previous year, registering an improvement of around 112 per cent.

During the period, MECL submitted 33 exploration reports and a total of 732 million tonnes (MT) of mineral reserves was added to National Mineral Inventory, which includes 380 MT of coal, 334 MT of lignite, 3.41 MT of copper ore, 9.68 MT of bauxite and 5.27 MT of ferro-silicon grade quartzite.

During these 9 months, a total of 102 sq. km. of geological mapping, 77,274 meters of borehold geophysical logging and 351 sq. km. of surface geophysical survey has been carried out. In laboratories the chemical laboratory determined 46,209 radicals in 19316 samples, physical laboratory determined 3,407 radicals in 436 samples and petrology laboratory studies 480 samples.

The sales income of the company during the period was Rs.51.48 crore as against the sales income of Rs.38.32 crore during the same period last year, registering an improvement of 34 per cent. The gross margin of the company has been Rs.11.21 crore as against Rs.3.03 crore during the same period of the previous year.

As a result of vigorous marketing efforts and participating in tenders on competitive rates, company received 36 work orders valued at Rs.34.13 crore upto December, 2004 and some more are in pipe line. Diversification activity continued in coal sampling and analysis, slim hole drilling for coal bed methane studies and ballast stone supply. During the period, the total revenue from diversification programme stood at Rs.8.50 crore.
