mahalanobis top international award in statistics to ugandan prof.ben kiregyera

The top international award in Statistics named after Prof.P.C.Mahalanobis, a pioneer in the field, was awarded this time to Prof.Ben Kiregyera of Uganda. The Minister for Statistics and Programme Implementation, Shri Oscar Fernandes presented the award to Prof.Kiregyera in Sydney recently, at the 55th Session of the International Statistical Institute. The Biennial award carries among other things, a cash prize of 5000 US Dollars.

While Mahalanobis is given at the international level, the ministry has also instituted two awards at the national level, one for outstanding young statistician named after Prof.C.R.Rao. The other award also given every alternate year, is for outstanding senior statistician, in memory of Prof.P.V.Sukhatme. These awards carry a cash prize of Rs.1, 00,000 each.

The Young Statistician Award in memory of Prof.C.R.Rao for 2004-05 was given to Dr.Probal Chaudhuri, Professor Indian Statistical Institute, Kolkata.
