The Labour & Employment Minister, Shri K. Chandrasekhar Rao has felicitated workers on the occasion of May Day. In his May Day Message, Shri Rao has said that workers ought to share the fruits of economic reforms and the government will ensure that they are not adversely affected by liberalization and globalization. The Labour Minister has solicited the cooperation of Trade Unions in "attaining the twin objectives of labour welfare and economic reforms."
Here is the full text of the Labour Minister’s May Day message:
"I extend to the workers all over the country my warmest greetings and best wishes on this memorable day which is also the International Labour Day. It is the day of struggle, as also of the hopes and aspirations of the working class. Labour crates capital as capital also creates labour, and both jointly contribute to the well being of the individuals and prosperity of the individual society and the Nation.
During the past five decades or so, several important steps have been initiated for improvement in the working conditions and welfare of the working class. However, still much remains to be done, particularly for the workers working in the unorganized sector which provides the major chunk of employment in the country. Some important legislations have been enacted for the workers in the unorganized sector, but these could not meet the requirements of every section of the working class in this sector. Hence, the Government is trying to improve upon the existing provisions which will go a long way to fulfill the objectives, particularly relating to the social security needs of the working class in the unorganized sector.
We have to ensure that the working class is not adversely affected by liberalization and globalization. They ought to share the fruits of reforms as well. I would also solicit the cooperation of the trade union organisations in attaining the twin objectives of labour welfare and economic reforms. On this day, the Government reiterates its belief in the ethos and culture of tripartism.
The Government, in coming years, wishes to further focus on workers’ education programmes, skill development and upgradation, and make vocational training more relevant in the light of the emerging needs of the economy. With this promise, I again convey my best wishes, on this auspicious day to my brother workers."
