Director General, World Health Organisation (WHO), Dr. Jong-Wook Lee, joined Indias Minister of Health and Family Welfare, Dr. Anbumani Ramadoss to administer polio vaccine to children here today ahead of a national vaccination campaign.
India is one of the six countries where polio still remains, and the country is making massive efforts to eradicate the paralyzing disease.
Speaking on the occasion, Dr. Ramadoss welcomed the Chief of WHO and thanked all the partners for working and supporting the polio immunization programme. He said, by the end of 2005 India will be free from polio.
The final push towards polio eradication requires intensive surveillance and targeted supplemental immunization activities to interrupt the transmission. The struggle against polio, seeking to reach all communities, is supported by a partnership led by the Government of India. It includes various stakeholders from the public sector, civil society, professional bodies, WHO and UNICEF and others among which most notably Rotary International, DFID, USAID and CDC
