The Department of Posts, in accordance with the Universal Postal Union (UPU) Charter aimed at promotion of awareness on the cause of environment protection, will effectively participate in celebrating the Earth Day on 22nd April which is being observed throughout the world. As part of the celebration Shri Dayanidhi Maran, Minister of Communications & Information Technology, will release the Special cover on the theme of Environment Protection and Sustainable Development, here tomorrow. On this occasion the Minister will also plant a tree to kick-start the nation-wide launch of planting at least three trees in every departmental building premises of Post Offices, all over the country. In all, it is estimated that more than 10000 saplings would be planted in nearly 4000 departmental buildings located through out the length and breadth of the country.
Since the day India has become the member of the Universal Postal Union Project Team on Environment and Sustainable Development, is committed to take all possible steps to be a fore-runner among the organisations in adopting environmental-friendly practices in its functioning. The UPU in its attempt to popularise environment-friendliness in the Post has been stressing inter-alia on the importance of recycling programme, use of environment-friendly products, using recycled material, participating in various environment awareness programmes, issue of postage stamps to promote environment and nature conservation, use of alternative fuels for vehicles and introduction of energy conservation measures in buildings. Thus India besides having become an active member of the UPU effort on promotion of environment, has identified a number of steps to be taken by all its stakeholders towards this cause.
