The Government of India today entered into two Memoranda of Cooperation (MOC) with the United States for exchange of knowledge and technology in the areas of road and maritime infrastructure. The two MOC were signed by Thiru T. R. Baalu, Union Minister of Shipping, Road Transport and Highways and the visiting US Secretary of Transportation, H.E. Mr. Norman Y. Mineta.
Under the MOC on Transport Science and Technology, the Deptt. of Road Transport and Highways, Ministry of Shipping, Road Transport and Highways, Government of India and the United States Department of Transport (USDOT) propose to promote scientific and technological cooperation and collaboration in the field of road transportation science and technology in the long term interest of both countries.
The MOC has paved the way for India and United States to cooperate and collaborate in the field of surface transport, inter-modal transport, road safety, Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS), transportation of the disabled, and other fields of mutual interest. It has also been agreed to establish communication links between road experts of the two countries to develop a framework for exchanging technical information as well as other areas of mutual interest like public transportation, highways and training of highway professionals. The American side has also offered training courses at the National Highway Institute of Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) for Indian Highway professionals.
Under the MOC on Maritime Transport Science and Technology, the two countries would cooperate and collaborate in the field of shipping and inter-modal operations, maritime safety and security, port management, dredging and dredger construction, ship recycling, maritime training and education, technological developments related to maritime sector, inland water transport and other fields of mutual interest. The MOC can make significant contribution towards encouraging and advancing safe, economical, efficient and environmentally sound transportation systems.
