CBI arrested a Captain and a Subedar Major who are employed
as Garrison Engineer and Junior Engineer (Civil) respectively
at Pune after catching them red-handed while accepting Rs.
one lakh bribe from a civil contractor. They had demanded
the bribe for passing the bill of the contractor which was
pending with them for more than six months. A case has been
registered in this connection on the complaint of the contractor
and searches of their office and residences are in progress.
CBI also arrested a Resident Deputy Collector, Khanvel, Silvasa
while demanding and accepting a bribe of Rs. 1.5 lakh from
a local resident of Silvasa today. The complainant had purchased
one hectare land in Silvasa which required conversion of land
use as non-agriculture. The official allegedly demanded Rs.
75,000/- per acre for issuing such a certificate. The total
bribe asked in the case was Rs. 1.7 lakh which was subsequently
negotiated and brought down to Rs. 1.5 lakh. The accused had
instructed the complainant to visit his house today morning
with the money.
