At the group level, the Consumer Price Index for Urban Non-Manual Employees for March 2005, indicates that food, beverages and tobacco and clothing, bedding and footwear etc contributed more for the increase compared with February last. According to the Central Statistical Organisation, Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation, this only portrays the consumption preference, pattern, and thereby the rise in the Index.
As already reported, the Consumer Price Index went up by one point during the month compared with February last but registered a rise of 4 per cent over a period of one year.
The CSO, which also released the Consumer Price Index for 59 select Urban Centres in the country said, that the variation in the index for these centres, ranged from 0.0 per cent to 9.4 per cent, with the largest increase in the case of Asansol and the least in Imphal. It was 0.0 to 2.0 per cent for seven centres, 2.1 to 4.0 per cent for 27 centres, 4.1 to 6.0 per cent for 18 centres and 6.1 per cent and above for 7 centres. As many as 33 centres showed lower annual percentage increase compared with the all India figure of 4.0 per cent while only one centre recorded increase, the same as that of the all India figure. Also, 25 centres recorded higher percentage increase compared to the All India average.
Among the four metropolitan cities, except Mumbai the Index increased by 2 points in Kolkata, by 1 point in Delhi, lower by 1 point in Chennai and remained the same as 438 of February 2005 in Mumbai.
