demand and supply gap of coal

Thursday, April 21, 2005

The Government projected a coal shortfall of 55 million tonnes (MT) against the total demand of 460.50 MT during the terminal year of Tenth Plan (2006-07). As per midterm appraisal by Planning Commission, the projected gap of 55 MT will decrease to a level of 42.5 MT in 2006-07.

Coal India Limited (CIL), a public sector unit of the Coal Ministry has taken up the following steps to reduce the gap between demand and indigenous supply :

i) 99 projects have been considered to be taken up during Xth Plan.

ii) Improvement in equipment utilisation.

iii) Mechanisation / modernisation of existing mines.

iv) Timely implementation of projects.

v) All new mines are being planned with mechanization.

In addition, 46 captive coal blocks have been allotted to various end users. This would contribute to reduction in gap between demand and supply.

This information was given by the Minister of State for Coal & Mines, Dr. Dasari Narayana Rao, in a written reply in the Rajya Sabha, today.
