Shri Dayanidhi Maran, Minister of Communications & Information Technology has welcomed the decision taken by the Nokia about setting up a manufacturing plant in Chennai. This acknowledgement came from the Minister, here today, soonafter he was communicated by Mr. Pekka Ala-Pletila, President, Nokia on behalf of the Nokia Board, about their proposal to set up the manufacturing facility in India. The proposed plant, at an estimated cost of USD 100-150 million, at Chennai will be the tenth mobile device production facility globally. The construction work of the plant will commence this month at Chennai and production is expected to begin in the first half of next year.
In a statement Shri Maran said, This was the outcome of the efforts taken by my Ministry with the formation of Inter-Ministerial Task Force under the Chairmanship of Secretary (Telecom) in last October, with a view to coordinate with various State Governments. The consistent efforts of the Ministry has placed the country in a perfect place for manufacturing mobile handsets. This also coincides with the inauguration of Elcoteq manufacturing facility at Bangalore on 11th April and also similar positive signals are coming to me from other leading manufacturers. This proves that the polices of the UPA Government are welcomed and proactive steps of the Ministry are well received and recognised. Very soon India will gain the deserved position as manufacturing hub and this will help in achieving the targets of providing 250 million telephones by 2007.
