Shri Dayanidhi Maran, Minister of Communications & Information Technology has today launched a nation-wide tree plantation drive to celebrate the 'Earth Day'. India Post, being a Member of the Universal Postal Union Project Team on Environment and Sustainable Development, celebrated the Earth Day in all its Post Office buildings, which is being observed throughout the world. As part of the celebrations, Shri Dayanidhi Maran also released a Special cover on the theme of Environment Protection and Sustainable Development, at a function held here today. India Post is aimed to plant at least three trees in every departmental building premises of Post Offices, all over the country. In all, it is estimated that more than 10000 saplings would be planted in nearly 4000 departmental buildings located through out the length and breadth of the country.
Speaking on the occasion Shri Maran said that India always stood committed and concerned with the environmental-friendly atmosphere. While the India Post is surging ahead with technological advancement like computerisation and modernisation at the same time it has to keep in mind the environmental agenda also while framing its policy on postal operations, he reminded. The Minister further said that India Post, in future, will focus on waste management and recycling of goods, etc., so as to keep the environment green.
