The subsidiaries of Coal India Limited (CIL), a public sector undertaking of the Coal Ministry have reclaimed 4173.89 hectares of land during the last 5 years. Tree plantation over the reclaimed land is a continuous and on-going process. This also helps in proper stabilization of land. There is a scope for growing fruit yielding tress or cash crops to make these sustainable and cost effective.
The area of reclaimed land, since inception, in Mahanadi Coalfields Limited (MCL), Sambalpur, Orissa, is 1,768 ha, out of which, plantation has been done on 1,045 ha. The amount spent for this purpose is approximately Rs. 78 crore.
This information was given by the Minister of State for Coal & Mines, Dr. Dasari Narayana Rao, in a written reply in the Rajya Sabha, today.
