border roads organisation completes srinagar muzaffarabad road link in record time

Wednesday, April 06, 2005

The Border Roads Organisation has successfully completed the black topping of 6.5 kms of road from Red Bridge to Kaman Post which is an important link to Srinagar – Muzaffarabad road and is an extension of National Highway No 1A (Jammu – Srinagar). The project Beacon of the Directorate General of Border Roads worked against time and heavy odds to develop the stretch to single lane class 9 road. Added to this, the Red Bridge had to be modified, repaired and improved to facilitate plying of medium sized buses. The BRO had many constraints such as bad weather, very few clear working days due to frequent and incessant rains and consequent landslides and limited working space due to movement of large number of store vehicles for working at command posts.

The Project Beacon employed over 150 GREF personnel, 500 labourers, a fleet of over 100 trucks and a host of modern earth moving and road construction machinery and equipment daily for moving over 6000 tonnes of road construction materials of various types. The team of Project Beacon led by Brig SS Dasaka, Chief Engineer, geared itself to convert this challenge into an opportunity to prove its mettle once again after its record breaking success in opening the Jammu – Srinagar National Highway in February this year subsequent to unprecedented snowfall and landslides in the valley. The black topping of the road was completed on 03rd of this month well ahead of schedule. As the nation thanks the BRO for its magnificent role in connecting the two nations, the gallant officer and men very humbly acknowledge their gratitude and are fully poised to take up another challenge of opening the Zojila axis within the normal time period in spite of the unprecedented snowfall during this year.
