The production of bio-fertilizers in the country is monitored on annual basis. The total production of bio-fertilizers by PSUs/Private Companies during 2003-04 was 11,647.48 tonnes. The demand for bio-fertilizers is increasing in the country and in order to augment production of bio-fertilizers, the Government has provided assistance for setting up Bio-Fertilizer Production Units under National Project on Development and Use of Bio-Fertilizers where financial assistance of Rs. 20 lakhs per unit was provided during Ninth Plan. The Government has recently taken up a new scheme “National Project on Organic Farming”. One of the important components of this scheme is providing financial assistance for setting up of Bio-Fertilizer Production Units @ 25 per cent of Project Cost with a maximum of Rs. 20 lakhs. The Scheme is being implemented as credit linked back ended subsidy through NABARD.
