anthracite coal imports

Thursday, April 21, 2005

The estimated annual consumption of anthracite coal in the country ranges from 7,000 tonnes to 11,000 tonnes. 7,597 tonnes and 10,524 tonnes of anthracite coal were imported during the year 2002-03 and 2003-04 respectively. Since Coal India Limited (CIL), a public sector unit of Coal Ministry and Singareni Collieries Company Limited (SCCL) do not produce anthracite coal indigenously, only limited consumers resort to import to meet their specific needs. High grade bituminous coal may be the alternative of anthracite coal which is abundant in India.

This information was given by the Minister of State for Coal & Mines, Dr. Dasari Narayana Rao, in a written reply in the Rajya Sabha, today.
