1.44 crore mandays lost due to industrial disputes during 2004

About one crore 44 lakh mandays were lost on account of 469 industrial disputes during 2004. According to the information received by the Labour Bureau from the State Labour Departments and Regional Labour Commissioners (Central) more than 18.83 lakh workers were involved in these disputes. 101 disputes pertained to the public sector and 368 disputes to private sector.

Over 1.04 crore mandays were lost due to lockouts and 24.35 lakh mandays were lost due to strikes in the private sector. In the Public Sector, 15.36 lakh mandays were lost because of strikes and 59.38 thousand mandays due to lockouts.

The highest number of 206 industrial disputes was reported from West Bengal involving 4.38 lakh workers and causing a loss of more than 99 lakh mandays. 61 disputes were reported from Tamil Nadu and 37 from Gujarat followed by26 from Uttar Pradesh, 23 from Andhra Pradesh, 19 from Rajasthan 16 from Karnataka and 8 from Kerala. The rest of the disputes were reported 13 other states.
