Another important aspect thrown up by the 59th round of the National Sample Survey, is the distribution of workers by industry and the shift of the workforce away from the agricultural sector to manufacturing and the tertiary sectors. Among the employed males and females majority were engaged in the primary sector in the rural areas, while in urban, majority were involved in the tertiary sector. The study revealed that more than 70% of the males and 84% of females were engaged in the agriculture sector in rural areas, while in urban, it was 60 % males and 56% females in the tertiary sector. The survey conducted by the National Sample Survey Organisation of the Ministry of statistics and Programme Implementation on Household consumer expenditure and employment-unemployment situation in the country during the period January-December, 2003, also disclosed that the proportion of the unemployed in the population as well as the unemployment rate was higher in urban areas than in rural. Further, these were higher among males than females in the rural areas. In rural areas, the proportions of the unemployed as well as the unemployment rates, remained almost unchanged compared to the 58th round of the National Sample Survey. In urban areas, the unemployment rates decreased for both males and females during 2003 compared to July-December, 2002. The decrease was about 1 percentage point for females. The report also said that the incidence of unemployment is very low in case of the households, which mainly depend on earnings from self-employment in farm or non-farm business. VKS/SR
