The Union Cabinet today gave its ex-post facto approval for ratification of the signing of the following two Agreements between India and Russia and also for operationalisation of these agreements:
a)Agreement on cooperation in the field of Exploration and use of Outer Space for Peaceful purposes; and
b)Agreement on long-term cooperation in the field of joint development, operation and utilization of the Russian Global Navigation Satellite System ( GLONASS) for Peaceful purposes.
The first agreement contains the general principles regarding cooperation in the field of exploration covering areas such as advance propulsion, satellite navigation, remote sensing, space communication, space science, manned and unmanned flights, etc. This Agreement has a validity of ten years.
The second agreement will benefit the country through joint realization of navigation satellites and the conduct of joint activities on the functional augmentation of the GLONASS system by (i) joint realization of onboard equipment for satellites for geo-stationary orbit; (ii) establishment of ground infrastructure; and (iii) development of a combined receiver operating on signals from GLONASS system and other navigation satellite systems.
