coal supply to thermal projects

Wednesday, April 20, 2005

Coal India Limited (CIL), a public sector unit of the Coal Ministry supplied about 234 million tonnes (MT) of coal to power utilities and National Thermal Power Corporation (NTPC) in 2003-04 while in 2004-05, it supplied 249 MT. In 2005-06, a supply of about 257 MT is envisaged.

CIL has been able to by and large meet the requirements of coal of the thermal power plants as per the Annual Action Plan targets although some loss of generation at certain individual units cannot be ruled out. The power sector has further been advised to import about 10 MT of coal during the current year to meet their increasing demand for coal due to increased generation.

This information was given by the Minister of State for Coal & Mines, Dr. Dasari Narayana Rao, in a written reply in the Lok Sabha, today.
