The markets climbed to an all time high on a day when most of the Asian markets dipped. The Sensex closed above the 13,000 mark for the first time ever.
The Sensex closed at 13,024.26 up 117.45 points or 0.9%. It took 135 days for Sensex to move from 12,000 to 13,000 and 123 days to move from 12,500 to 13,000. The Nifty gained 30 points to close at 3769. The BSE Small Cap Index closed at 6,483.80 down 36.58 points or 0.5%.
The BSE Midcap Index closed at 5,422.63 up 26.36 points or 0.5%. The BSE Bankex was up 1.9% at 6,517.85. Allahabad Bank, ICICI Bank, HDFC Bank, Kotak Mahindra moved upwards. The BSE IT Index gained 0.4% at 4,859.60. Patni Computer, HCL Tech, Wipro, Infosys and Satyam advanced. The BSE Capital Goods Index was up 0.5% at 8,704.26. Alstom Projects, Alfa Laval, Lakshmi Machine, Gammon India and L&T closed higher.
The BSE Health Care Index was up 0.7% at 3,653.35. Glenmark, Cadila Health, Sterling Bio, Dr Reddys Labs, Orchid Chemical closed higher. The BSE FMCG Index gained 0.4% at 2,018.62. Dabur India, McDowell, Colgate, Shaw Wallace and HLL closed in green.The BSE Oil and Gas Index gained 1.2% to close at 6,050.21. Chennai Petro, HPCL, Reliance Natura, BPCL ended in green.
The BSE Auto Index closed flat at 5,388.50 and the BSE Metal Index was down 0.4% to close at 9,098.73. The NSE cash turnover was at Rs 8412.3 crore and the NSE F&O turnover was at Rs 25315.7 crore. The BSE cash turnover was Rs 3696.95 crore. Total market wide turnover was at Rs 37424.95 crore.
