TADA Court Judge P. D. Kode yesterday convicted another person in the
1993 Mumbai serial blasts case.
The accused, Ayub Ibrahim Qureshi, Accused No. 123 was found guilty of
charges similar to what actor Sanjay Dutt has been accused of.
Ayub Ibrahim Qureshi, Accused No. 123, was charged with possessing a
pistol, spare magazines and 52 live rounds of ammunition of the original
consignment which landed at Shrivardhanin with the purpose of creating
terrorists acts in a notified area.
Qureshi later disposed off the pistol and ammunition, that were handed
to him by convict Nasim Barmare, near a cemetery in Bandra. Qureshi
faced charges of being part of the conspiracy to bomb the city, like
Sanjay Dutt. However Judge Kode acquitted him of this charge for lack of
evidence.
Qureshi, a Tiger Memon aide, is the first accused in the 1993 Mumbai
blasts case trial to be convicted for the possession of arms in a
notified area based on the confessional statement of convict Barmare and on
recovery of the arms cache.
According to a report in 'The Afternoon' newspaper', Sanjay Dutt had
illegal possession of an AK57 rifle and ammunition which were later
destroyed by friends. His offence is seen as more serious than Qureshi’s.
With yesterday’s judgment, the actor’s fate appears to be sealed. The
offence is registered under Section 5 of the TADA Act for possessing and
destroying the AK57.
The Verdict on Sanjay Dutt is expected this month.
