'Umrao Jaan', the much hyped remake of the 1981 movie of the same name
is a box office disaster. Bollywood Trade Pundit Taran Adarsh writes, "The much-awaited UMRAO JAAN has opened to a lukewarm response on
Friday. The opening was in the range of 25%-30% at several places. The dull
opening has come as a shock because the film stars A-list actors and has
been made by J.P. Dutta, a highly respected name in film circles."
Response all over the country to the Abhishek Bachchan - Aishwarya
starrer has been cold. Even rumors of their marriage couldn't save the
film. News channel Aaj Tak covered people from North India describing the
movie as 'boring' and saying that Aishwarya was no match for Rekha in
the title role.
Mumbai's cinemagoers echo the response of North India. A Mumbai
resident in his thirties talking to Aaj Tak described this as the 'worst J P
Dutta movie' ever. J P Dutta, director of the 1997 blockbuster, 'Border'
after making duds like Refugee, LOC was banking on 'Umrao Jaan'.
'Umrao Jaan' reportedly sold for Rs.3.5 Crores (About $750,000) for the
Delhi-UP territory may not even recover half that sum according to
sources
Critics too have panned the movie.
Rediff.com's Sukanya Verma writes in her movie review of 'Umrao Jaan'
that the movie 'barely demonstrates the soul or fabric of a classic' and
further says that "Bachchan Jr is wasted in an inconsequential role".
The Hindustan Times' review says Dutta's 'Umrao Jaan' lacks 'Ada' and
that the love scenes between Ash and Abhishek
'seem unendurably long'.
Midday's Sarita Tanwar has written about the absence of screen
chemistry between Ash and Abhishek in a movie review of 'Umrao Jaan' published
today.
The general opinion is that the movie is too long. A co-star of
Abhishek Bachchan who watched the movie when asked for her opninion said the
movie was so boring, it could have been better titled 'Umrao Yawn'!
Shabana Azmi's performance, however, has being praised in some reviews.
