The UN has said that India has the largest number of AIDS infections. An estimated 2.5 crore people have died due to AIDS worldwide and 4 crore people are infected with it.
India has 5.7 million people infected with HIV/AIDS. This is even more than South Africa's 5.5 million infections.
The worst affected region is sub-Saharan Africa, where several countries have large populations infected.
Barely nine per cent of pregnant women in poor countries are receiving services like access to drugs to help prevent mother-to-child transmission. This has resulted in many mother to baby AIDS infections.
