Young Indian tennis star Sania Mirza has climbed one place to number 39 in the latest WTA Tour rankings. Sania has compiled 516.75 points and despite not taking the court, moved up at the expense of American Jill Craybas who lost one spot to number 40.
The Hyderabad girl had represented India in the recent Federation Cup zonal qualifiers in Korea. She is currently on a three-week holiday break. On the doubles front too Sania gained one place to reach number 38. Sania Mirza was last week quoted as saying her target this year was only to stay in the top 50.
Other bright young Indian player is Shikha Uberoi who gained one spot in the singles ranking to get to 182nd. Ankita Bhambri and Isha Lakhani were placed 332nd and 366th respectively. Shikha is ranked 159th in doubles with Ankita is at 347th.
Frenchwoman Amelie Mauresmo leads the rankings ahead of Belgian Kim Clistjers and Maria Sharapova of Russia.
Nadia Petrova gained a spot to number four displacing Justine Henin-Hardenne.
