Maharashtra Additional Chief Secretary Ashok Khot has been arrested for allegedly defying court’s order and permitting sawmills to operate in the Tansa Wildlife Sanctuary.
Khot was taken to the Malabar Hill Police Station and then to Sion Hospital for a medical check up, after which he spent the night at the Thane prison.
Khot, who had been declared an absconder by the Mumbai Police after he failed to surrender, was arrested at the Chhatrapati Shivaji Airport on his way back from Delhi.
The Mumbai Police had sent a team to Delhi where they suspected Khot would be found. The cops accompanied him on the flight back to Mumbai and later arrested him at the airport.
In a historic judgment last week, the Supreme Court had sentenced Khot and former Maharashtra transport minister Surupsinh Naik to a month in jail for contempt of court.
The two had permitted six sawmills to operate in the Tansa Wildlife Sanctuary despite orders to the contrary.
