Define 'office of profit': BJP

Senior BJP leader M Venkaiah Naidu said there was a need for a categorical definition of what constituted an office of profit and his party was not opposed to a law being enacted by Parliament to facilitate it.

Talking to newsmen in Chennai, Naidu said that BJP was opposed to promulgation of an ordinance to leave some 'offices of profit' from attracting disqualification of membership from Parliament. But, he added that there was a need to define an office of profit.

Naidu said the post of National Advisory Council was created by the UPA government and Sonia Gandhi, as its chairperson, was given Cabinet minister status and as such she "definitely held an office of profit."

He said Congress President Sonia Gandhi’s resignation from the Lok Sabha was not a sacrifice as claimed by the Congress, but a "compelling necessity" as otherwise Sonia would have been disqualified.

The BJP leader said that in its recommendation to disqualify Jaya Bachchan from the Rajya Sabha, the Election Commission had clearly stated any post, even in an advisory capacity, was an office of profit.
