The Municipal Corporation of Greater Mumbai (MCGM) is weighing several options to solve the problem of disposing tonnes of silt from the river bed of Mithi after its clean-up.
Before the monsoon, Mumbaikars will see the natural look of the Mithi river because its widening work from 30 to 40 ft will be done in three months.
Additional Municipal Commissioner Shri Kant Singh told FPJ that the Chitale committee suggestions would be implemented soon to give an original look to the Mithi river. The estimated cost of this entire work would be nearly Rs 60 crore. The desilting operation will take at least three months.
During this period, the BMC will desilt four lakh cubic metres of clay as well as three lakh metres removed by the MMRDA will be thrown out of Mithi in the three-month duration. This seven lakh cubic metre tonne clay will be deposited at Kanjumarg dumping ground, in. low lying areas and corridors which comes within BMC limits.
Even Chief Minister Vilasrao Deshmukh has asked the Thane, Raigad and Mumbai district collectors to give a helping hand in desilting Mithi."
The large scale encroachments along Mithi will be demolished by the city collector with the help of machinery provided by the BMC. The rehabilitation of 6000 hutments will be done in various location of the city where the state government is taking initiative.
