Setback for Sachin Tendulkar

- By Parinda News Bureau, March 22, 2006, 12:10 IST

The participation of Sachin Tendulkar, who was jeered and heckled in the first innings in the third test match was ruled out for the entire seven match one day series againist England. This decision was taken following a shoulder injury, undisclosed so far. Sachin will undergo a surgery in London for this.

The cricket board's decision has come as unexpected. Sachin so far had not shown any signs of a shoulder injury during the third test match. The cricket board too had not indicated anything of this sort. Sachin was fielding without showing any signs of shoulder trouble or strain.

Observers believe this is a way to drop Sachin from this ODI series due to his lackluster performance and to ensure that he is in form for the West Indies tour.

Tendulkar, often called 'Master Blaster' has had a poor run lately with a abysmally low 18.66 average in tests in the last series against Pakistan and the current one against England. Sachin will be out of action for eight weeks after a surgery which he is expected to undergo shortly.

It is unsure whether he will be able to participate in the West Indies tour that begins May 12. It is believed that he will consult Dr. Andrew Wallace, an orthopedic surgeon in London, to discuss the surgery for his right shoulder tear and a cyst.

The selectors on Tuesday included Andhra batsman Venugopala Rao in the squad-of 15 for the first three ODIs against England beginning at Delhi on March 28. East medium bowler Munaf Patel also has been chosen for the team following his impressive debut performance in the Tests. He has replaced pace bowler Zaheer Khan.

The final team comprises of Rahul Dravid (captain), Virender Sehwag, Gautam Gambhir, Yuvraj Singh, Mohammad Kaif, Suresh Raina, Mahender Singh Dhoni, Irfan Pathan, Rudra Pratap Singh, Shantakumaran Sreesanth, Munaf Patel, Ajit Agarkar, Harbhajan Singh, Venugopala Rao and Ramesh Powar.
