Actress Sushmita Sen’s imported Land cruiser is in custody of The
Directorate of Revenue Intelligence. DRI has asked her to pay Rs.20 lakh
as customs duty.
Actual date of the manufacture was 2003, while the documents allegedly
stated its date of manufacture as December 1998. The Vehicle was undervalued
and Rs.9 lakhs was paid towards custom duty. The importer and the
broker mistakenly cleared the chassis number of the vehicle which has a market value
of Rs.56 lakh. The duty payable was really Rs.20 lakh.
Haren Choksi sold the vehicle to Sen in May last year. Also, the vehicle
was brought into the country under the transfer of residence (TR) scheme
that doesn’t give permission to sell the vehicle until two years after
personal use by the importer.
Toyota confirmed that the vehicle was manufactured in 2003. DRI is also
keeping an eye on such imported cars and is expected to seize many
more imported vehicles in the near future.
Sen was not available for comment.
