Cricketer-turned-politician Navjot Singh Sidhu's wife Navjot Kaur may contest elections in Punjab, Sidhu hinted today.
She may contest next month's by-election for the Amritsar Lok Sabha seat that he had to vacate last month following his conviction in a criminal case.
'There are people in the party and other supporters who have suggested that she could contest. I leave everything to the top BJP (Bharatiya Janata Party) leadership,' Sidhu told the media. Navjot Kaur is a practicing government doctor in Patiala.
Sidhu resigned in December following his conviction by the Punjab and Haryana High court in an 18-year-old road rage case. He was held guilty, as a scuffle led to the death of Gurnam Singh, 65, in Patiala town of Punjab in December 1988. The high court had Dec 6 convicted Sidhu and pronounced a suspended three-year jail term forhim. He is currently out on bail till Jan 31. Sidhu has already filed an appeal in the Supreme Court against the high court's verdict.
The Election Commission has announced Feb 13 as date for by-election to the seat. Voting will take place for the Punjab assembly election polls on the same date.
BJP sources here said Sidhu and the party were looking forward to the Supreme court's ruling on Sidhu's plea. If the Supreme Court upholds the high court verdict, Sidhu would have to go to jail and cannot contest. His wife's name was being proposed for such a situation, say sources. He would contest the by-poll if the apex court strikes down his conviction, sources added.
