Illegal structures in Ulhasnagar, on the outskirts of Mumbai, are once again being demolished. The Supreme Court in December refused to stop demolitions, reversing a Bombay High Court order.

The lower court had ordered the demolition of over 15,000 illegal structures, many of which the state government managed to protect through a special ordinance.

The Ulhasnagar Municipal Corporation has to demolish nearly 620 illegal structures by mid July 2007. So far over 230 illegal structures that were to be demolished are in the process of being regularized. This was after residents agreed to pay the fines prescribed by the state government.
